Overall Introduction to CBE

The Certificate in Business English (CBE) is a 9-month course. It is a vibrant preparatory course specially designed for students who wish to pursue a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or a professional Degree programme ("The Business Programme") This English course has been carefully designed to guide and prepare students for the academic modules in the Business programme. The primary objective is to improve the students’ English proficiency and to develop their general academic capability so that they are in a good position to better understand their lessons, course materials and examination questions in the Business Programme.

Students who successfully graduate from the CBE course will find their journey through their Business Programmes (made up of the different Business courses and focuses, and inclusive of the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure courses) made much easier.

The Certificate in Business English (CBE) awarded by EASB Institute of Management will be considered to have met the English language proficiency requirement equivalent to TOEFL 550 and IELTS band 6.0 for admission into the degree programmes offered by the following universities:

English Entry Requirements

While EASB allows students to proceed into the Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes, it is mandatory for all students to have a minimum level of competency in English, equivalent to that of IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 550 paper-based score (or 213 computer-based score; 79 Internet-based score) for admission into the universities for completion of the degree programmes.

If you do not have either of these, you are required to undertake our English Training for Entry into Degree Programmes (ETEDP) course and to pass at Band 3 (Equivalent overall IELTS band 6.0 and above). Upon successful completion of ETEDP, you would be awarded the Certificate in Business English (CBE).

The Certificate in Business English (CBE) is a Business English course registered and approved by Singapore 's Ministry of Education. It is specially designed to fit into our diploma, advanced diploma and degree programmes. It comprises of two components, namely:

For students who have been awarded Cambridge International Examinations' GCE O level (Ordinary level) or A level (Advanced level) in Singapore or abroad, they would be granted exemption from ETEDP.


Request for Exemption of B-ETEDP and Direct Entry into ETEDP

ETEDP is treated as one complete course.            
However, students can request for exemption from B-ETEDP and direct entry into ETEDP. In such cases, the request is granted only if the student is assessed to have E Band 1 (equivalent to IELTS 4.0) or above, through the following assessments of proficiency:

Course Objectives

English Training for Entry into Degree Programme (ETEDP) is a preparatory course for students wishing to pursue further studies towards a Diploma or a Degree.  This course is designed to prepare students for academic work specifically in the subject area of business. So the goal is to develop students' general academic English skills with the main content focus being business topics


B-ETEDP: Course Synopsis

B-ETEDP is an entry-level English programme which provides the necessary foundation to prepare students to proceed to the English Training for Entry into Degree Programme (ETEDP), a course with Business English focus to equip students with sufficient language skills to pursue further studies towards achieving a degree qualification or higher.


B-ETEDP, a three-stage programme , focuses on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as pronunciation and vocabulary. It teaches students how to use English to cope in everyday situations and purposes connected to school, social life, work and leisure. It adopts the philosophy that learning of English using authentic communication is more meaningful, rewarding, and more effective.

B-ETEDP: Pre-requisites

B-ETEDP caters to students who intend to pursue tertiary education at a degree level or higher, but who do not yet have the necessary foundation in the English Language or whose standard of English proficiency is below IELTS 4.0 or its equivalent

B-ETEDP: Duration

B-ETEDP consists of 3 stages, conducted over a period of 3 months.

B-ETEDP: Structure

It is a multi-level programme covering the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as enhancing pronunciation and vocabulary. It gives particular emphasis on listening and speaking.  The main goal of this programme is to enable students to communicate according to the situation, purpose and roles of the participants.

The first two stages of B-ETEDP (B1 & B2) are designed for students who are beginners requiring a thorough review of basic grammar structures and vocabulary. It provides a smooth transition to the last stage (B3).

The third stage of B-ETEDP (B3) builds on the existing foundation for fluent communication already established in the prior level by expanding upon the grammatical, lexical and functional skills.

B-ETEDP: Assessment and Awards

Each student will have to undertake a placement test to determine the language competency for placement at the appropriate entry stage. Upon registering, a student will need to complete that particular stage before progressing into the next sequential stage. Upon successful completion of each stage, the student will be awarded the corresponding B-ETEDP Certificate of Achievement


ETEDP: Course Synopsis

This course is designed to provide students with the necessary English foundation (in terms of oral communication and writing skills) together with the understanding of the basic concepts for entry into EASB's Diploma/ Degree programmes. The business topics include the nature of business activity and the changing environment; types of business; aims and objectives of business; human resources; accounting and finance; marketing; and production.
After completing ETEDP, students will be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:

ETEDP: Pre-requisites

It is assumed that the students are at an intermediate level when they begin the course and the aim is for them to be able to function in an academic setting upon completion, so a lot of progress has to be made in a short time.

ETEDP: Duration

This course, comprising of 3 progressively-graded stages, is to be conducted over a period of 6 months. The duration for each stage is 2 months.  Each stage consists of 40 sessions of 3 hours each which equates to a total of 120 sessions for the entire ETEDP course.

ETEDP: Structure

This course consists of 3 stages which are as follows:

The modules are inter-related; with subsequent modules building upon the concepts and understanding of earlier ones. It is therefore crucial for students to gradually and consistently work throughout the various levels. The textbooks and other supplementary resources have been carefully selected, and are meant to build a solid foundation for the understanding of business concepts.

It is assumed that the students are at a pre-intermediate to intermediate level when they begin the course and the aim is for them to be able to function in an academic setting upon completion, so a lot of progress has to be made in a short time.

The course includes presentations - individual or group, pair work, group work, homework, compositions, dictation, research-writing, vocabulary quizzes, power point presentations and practice tests.

 


ETEDP: Assessment and Awards

Each B-ETEDP student will progress to ETEDP automatically after sitting for the final B-ETEDP exam.
Fresh students who wish to enter ETEDP directly can only do so upon having obtained 4.0 for IELTS or the EASB Placement Test.

Students who use IELTS as proof of proficiency must submit their IELTS Test Report Form for verification with the IELTS Verification Website Service ( University of Cambridge , ESOL Examinations).

Upon registering for ETEDP, a student will need to complete that particular stage before progressing into the next sequential stage.

Upon successful completion of the entire ETEDP level and attainment of ETEDP Band 3 (equivalent to IELTS 6.0) for the final ETEDP exams, students will be awarded the Certificate in Business English (CBE).
