Curricula design was based primarily on discussions with the industry, students, the public, staffs expertise and analysis of emerging trends. The curricula strengthen the relationship between theory, practice and research.
The 3-year BA (Hons) degree in Banking and Finance are designed to be highly relevant to current practices in an Asian context, combining a core of common business modules with a range of banking and finance related modules throughout the 3 years degree program. The programmes have clear aims, objectives and learning outcomes which reflect the exit levels of the programme.

This is a 6-months programme, comprising 2 terms. Each term is of 12 weeks duration, including 11 weeks of formal class time and independent study. Formal class time will consist of 2 hours of lectures and 3 hours of tutorials per week. Examination will be held on week 12.

Upon successful completion of all 8 modules, the student will be awarded the EASB Diploma in Business Management. |

Module Synopsis
Fundamentals of Banking Law
The study of Banking Law is to equip students with a working knowledge of banking law. This subject allows students to understand the legal relationship between a bank and its customers, the duties of a bank and of the customer, the nature of cheques, the rights and liabilities of the parties to cheques and the bank's role as a paying and collecting agent. It also covers the legal aspects of the lending operations, security taking methods and enforcement rights of a bank, the implications of judicial management and the legal principles of insurance in relation to security taking.
Economics
This subject provides an introduction to microeconomics and macroeconomics theories and policies. Topics covered include demand and supply; applications of supply and demand; various market structures; government roles in economy; unemployment; production and exchange; economic aggregates such as aggregate production and employment, the general level of prices and inflation, exchange rates, and the balance of payments. Analysis is particularly directed to models of an open economy and to current economic problems and policy issues The current world economic trends will also be discussed.
Principles of Accounting
This module is the foundation to the understanding of the principles and concepts of Accounting. Students will be exposed to the application of these accounting concepts in the preparation of financial statements for use by individuals, business, non-profit organisations and government institutions. Students will also be developing expertise in using these accounting principles and concepts in their analytical approach to financial problem-solving.
Principles of Management
This subject is designed to provide students with an overview of the key functions of management. It focuses on foundations of management covering the essential concepts, and providing a sound understanding of these key management issues. Topics covered include individual dimensions of organisations’ behaviour; perception and learning; communication and motivation; groups and interpersonal influence; interaction and leadership; and organizational structure.
Principles of Banking and Finance
This subject provides the foundation in banking and finance on which subsequent and more specialised finance units are built on. The types and functions of financial institutions will also be briefly covered. Students will be taught on the institutional features of financial systems and identify key issues and problems arising in banking and finance. The various external macro factors affecting the banking and finance industry will also be discussed.
Money and Monetary Systems
This module provides an introductory explanation to the origin of money and its roles in the past and present monetary systems. It provides an insight to the mechanics of how currencies work in a market economy and how Central banks can use as an instrument to regulate the growth of the economy. The relationship between interest rate to price of currency is also discussed in a broader perspective.
Principles of Marketing
This module aims to provide a good understanding to the role of marketing and marketers. It offers discussions on understanding the marketing decision making; market segmentation; cross-cultural consumer behavior; the marketing mix; product planning and development; marketing strategies and control and evaluation of marketing management. Students learn to appreciate the dynamics of the changing variables in the environment. The focus is that many products can satisfy a given need but product choice is guided by the concepts of value, cost, and satisfaction. The role of the marketer is to convince the buyers that their choice is the most appropriate one.
Lending Principles and Practices
This module provides the fundamental concepts and knowledge to effectively manage the lending requests made by customers in a structure lending cycle, including the repayment or recovery of such advances. The student is given a broad framework of the lending environment and the legal regime in which lenders operate, before moving onto analysing the different types of customers, their lending requirements and the wide range of lending services that can be used to satisfy those lending needs. It also covers the process of debt recovery.
Organizational Behaviour
This module enables students to understand the basic concepts of individual and group processes and behaviours in organizations and how they affect other people in the organization. This knowledge enables students to understand why people behave in that way and what needs to be done to ensure a harmonious and effective working relationship in an organization. It also aims for students to acquire the knowledge and expertise for efficient and effective use and deployment of human resources and to use them to the fullest benefit of the organization in its attempts to achieve the corporate goals and objectives.
Corporate Finance
This subject provides students with the basic knowledge of financial management, including the key factors influencing the financial environment and the role of finance in business. It offers discussion over the financial objectives of firms, cash planning and budgeting, working capital management, the management of current assets, capital budgeting decisions using discounting techniques, and the sources of short-term and long-term funds.
Financial Markets and Institutions
The subject discusses the roles and operations of the various financial institutions like commercial banks, merchant banks, finance companies, insurance companies. Many new financial institutions are now operating in Singapore and the scope of financial activities has also expanded. Financial markets which comprise the capital market, the money market, the Asian Dollar Market, Asian Bond Market and the Stock exchange is also covered in this module.
Banking Operations
The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the practices underlying banking operations. The subject enable student to analyses banking operations, reviews competitive strategies and the marketing of bank services. These areas are examined using theoretical models to evaluate the rapidly evolving policy of retail, international and investment banking.
Research Methods
This course serves as an introduction to educational research. It aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply the scientific method and to design research projects in their chosen discipline. Students will become familiar with a range of research tools and methodologies, gain an understanding of quantitative and qualitative approaches to important research related issues, and enhance their oral and written skills in relation to research. The assignments take students through the process of producing a research proposal which forms the basis for commencing a research program and into the implementation of field-work data collection and analysis using SPSS.
Industrial Project
The module is designed to complement the student’s classroom studies through first hand experience of the work environment. It creates the opportunity to learn through applying the skill sets, techniques, and knowledge gained from the banking and finance program to real life situations. It aims to expose you to the banking and finance environment so that you will perform more competently in your future vocation. It provides you with opportunities to take responsibility for your own learning and test your resourcefulness and initiative.
