Synopsis
IS1013: Introduction to Information Technology
Introduction to Information Technology gives students the experience, knowledge, and capabilities needed to apply information technology effectively through their lives. This module includes the explanations of computing concepts, practical applications of technology theory, and emphasis on the historical and societal impacts of technological innovations.
IS1023: Introduction to Software Development
The aim of this module is to provide you with a positive introduction to programming; including procedural programming and related problem solving skills. It is assumed that you have little or no previous experience of programming. Procedural programming concepts will be the foundation on which you will develop your programming and related problem-solving skills and will assist you to understand the important features of the programming language. You will also be introduced to some elements of object oriented programming.
IS1033: Web Concepts & Design
This module gives the developmental approach to Web Publishing, covering topics on the advantages of Web publishing, basic design principles and writing for the Web. It provides students the perspective web design and development.
IS1043: Discrete Mathematics for Computing
This module introduces students to the mathematics of computer science, it prepares students for the math they will encounter in later courses. With applications that are specific to computer science, this module helps students develop reasoning skills and provides them with an early introduction to fundamental mathematics necessary for future math and computer science courses.
IS1053: Information Systems in Organisations
One of the greatest challenges that we face in information systems courses is how to keep pace in the class with what is happening out in the real world. Hardware, software, telecommunications, and networking equipment - all of it continues to become faster, cheaper, and better, and business organizations continue to adopt and adapt these new technologies rapidly. In fact, whereas a decade ago large organizations and businesses spend two or three percent of their revenues on information technology, today, spending ranges from seven to ten percent. Organisations are now relying on technology as a fundamental part of their business strategy and their competitiveness.
This module begins by introducing student an overview of the importance of information systems in organizations, what innovative organizations are doing with contemporary information systems and more importantly, where things are headed. Decision-making within an organization and organizational systems such as Transaction Processing Systems, Management Information Systems and Executive Information Systems will be covered in detail within the module.
IS1063: E-Commerce
This module provides an overview of e-commerce, a field that continues to evolve as companies look to the Internet for solutions to problems and opportunities for new business. The module will examine the Internet and the World Wide Web, with technologies that define that infrastructure of e-commerce.
IS1073: Database Management
More so now that before, the success of an organization depends on its ability to acquire accurate and timely data about the operations, to manage this data effectively, and to use to analyse and guide its activities. As the information superhighway is fast taking up a very important role in all our lives, it is imperative that we know how to store and manage the information (data). Hence we see information processing to be rapidly growing into a multibillion-dollar industry.
In this subject, you will be introduced to the fundamentals in database systems or file organisations. A hands-on approach will be provided to relational database systems, with an emphasis on practical topics such as indexing methods, SQL, and database design. Also covered in this subject will be the ER model, Internet databases as well as Information Retrieval (IR).
IS1083: Human Computer Interaction
This module discusses all the central issues of human-computer interaction (HCI), and shows via a wealth of examples how HCI helps in the design of more efficient and usable systems. Throughout the module, there is a strong emphasis on design and how user-centered design helps produce systems that are more efficient and
