| Introduction
The University of London is recognized internationally as a center of excellence. It is a federation of 19 Colleges and 9 Institutes. One of these Colleges is LSE. As part of its work to widen access to higher education, LSE continues to provide academic direction for the programs that are offered at a distance. These programs, offered through the External System, are for those who, due to financial, career or family commitments, need flexible study arrangements or unable to study in any of their colleges or institutes.
The University maintains robust and effective quality assurance mechanisms for all of its qualifications. All graduates, whether they attended one of the University's Colleges or Institutes or studied at a distance, are awarded a University of London degree. Academics appointed by LSE write the study materials and set and mark examinations. They also ensure that the standard of these qualifications is the same as those taken by students studying at LSE.
Statute 66 (2) of the University states:
'Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination'.
