Modules
- 1. Introduction to Management Accounting and Finance
-
This module provides an understanding to the concepts and analytical techniques in management accounting that can provide relevant information for managerial decision-making in planning and controlling the firm’s activities. Topics include cost behaviour and forecasting, activity-based costing and management, cost-volume analysis, relevant information for managerial decision-making, preparation of master and flexible budgets, responsibility reporting and capital budgeting.
- 2. Introduction to Behavioural Finance
-
This module provides an introduction to a relatively new area in economics and finance that focuses on alternative theories of risk-taking behaviour and biases in information processing that influence financial decision-making. The module examines two inter-related questions: what are the psychological mechanisms of individuals’ social and economic behaviours, and how do society and the economy act on the psychology of individuals? The topics include the rationality or irrationality of consumers, managing personal finances, material possessions, social and cultural influences, and materialistic values.
- 3. International Marketing

The module addresses the challenges of leading and managing the
development and refinement of organisation strategy in the shaping
of international marketing context. Management and leadership,
entrepreneurial knowledge and skills will also be addressed. It
challenges students to create a plan for the launch of a product or
service into a new international market, which requires students to
conduct a detailed study and analysis of the context.
- 4. Strategic Management

This module provides an overview of strategic management, the strategic planning process and what it means to be able to think and act strategically. The module focuses on understanding the use, value and limitations of key models, tools and frameworks, and how the outputs of these can be used as helpful inputs to the strategic decision-making process. Topics include value creation, competitive advantage, organisational design and change, and managing innovation, creativity and knowledge.
- 5. Critical Issues in Hospitality and Tourism Leadership

This module develops students' ability to evaluate, critically consider and apply the theory and practice of leadership with specific references to the global hospitality and tourism context. Students critically evaluate a range of problems in connection with leadership and leadership style in contemporary hospitality and tourism context; apply a range of evaluative techniques, to provide solutions to these complex issues. The topics include behavioural leadership, emotional intelligence, cultural influence, gender and leadership in women, and leadership and the future.
- 6. Organisational Behaviour

This module develops participants’ knowledge and understanding of individual and group behaviour as well as organisational processes and structures in order to improve organisational performance and effectiveness. The case study component will require students to apply theories and concepts learned to an actual case scenario. Topics include personality, intelligence, attitudes, perceptions, learning styles, group formation, and organisational learning, design and commitment.
- 7. Contemporary Issues in International Management

This module engages students in a critical exploration of the principal
theories, concepts and principles of global management. Students
learn to examine in critical perspective the practice of management
through an engagement with a range of contemporary issues in
management across different organisational and cultural contexts.
Students will critically analyse issues and specific case studies, which
are at the forefront of the study of international management and to
critically review and consolidate knowledge and thinking in relation to
management.
- 8. Global Issues and Challenges for Hospitality Managers

This module engages students to critically assess a notable issue and/or challenge, for hospitality professionals that have been evaluated, analysed and commends a range of actions with demonstrable outcomes. It facilitates the enhancement of team, group and leadership skills in planning, maintaining, evaluating and improving hospitality operations. The topics include creativity and innovation in the hospitality industry, technology, emerging markets, employability and migrant workers, and the cruise ship industry.
- 9. Community Impact and Practice
-
This module facilitates and develops students’ appreciation of the
importance of community, sustainability, corporate social
responsibility and ethics through leadership, development and
participation within communities and enable them to engage in
community based projects with socially responsible objectives and to
investigate, define, plan, negotiate and lead a community project. At
the heart of this module lies the firm belief that the responsibility of
leaders and managers does not stop at an organisational level, but
includes the responsibility to individuals, communities and society as
a whole.
