Advanced Diploma in Logistics and Operations Management

The Advanced Diploma in Logistics and Operations Management equips students with the skills to apply scientifically-based techniques to work-related problems. Students learn to apply skills in Transport management, problem-solving, supply chain and logistics and to develop decision support, scheduling and control systems. The programme enables you to develop an in-depth study of logistics and Operations management

Programme Objective

Have an understanding of the strategic role of transportation management and latest developments in term of project work and project management. Designed to provide students with an overview of the key functions of management in logistics. Help expose students to the techniques used in the design, layout and management of warehouses and distribution centers.
To equip students with a thorough understanding of the types of business organizations and issues of employment and the legal aspects of the logistics. To adept in the art of problem solving and will be effective learners in the ever-evolving arena of the logistics and supply chain management industries.

Delivery Method

Generally the curriculums for all levels are taught over 4 terms of 12 weeks. Modules are conducted in formal instructor-led classroom sessions where students are introduced to the course discipline. Each term will cover 2-3 modules with 50 contact hours per module. Lectures are 3-hour sessions and Tutorial 3-hour sessions weekly.

Each module is assessed by academic work comprising written assignments, case study reports, essays, examination as determined by the subject profile. The assessment criterion varies from module to module and level to level.
  • 1. Organizational Behaviour
    • This module provides students an introduction to the field and trends in organizational behavior and an understanding of the fundamental concepts and practices of individual and group behaviors and its implications for Managers. The module also covers key topics such as Value and Attitudes; Personality and Emotion, Perception and Individual and Group Decision Making; Job Satisfaction; Motivation Theories; Job Specialization; Job Design, Rotation, Enlargement and Enrichment; Communication; Sources of Power; Conflict and Conflict Resolution; Leadership and Leadership Styles; Organizational Structures and Design; Organizational Culture; and Organizational Change.
  • 2. E-Commerce with Logistics
    • The Internet has rapidly become the primary commerce and communications medium for virtually every industry, large or small. Global competition, laws, ethics, security, privacy, and consumer preferences are among the issues being impacted by e-commerce. Today, we enjoy the growing success of business-to-consumer, business-to-business, and business-to-government interfaces. Each interface requires effective websites, regular maintenance and upgrades, bandwidth and Internet Service providers (ISP) that will accommodate the growing volume of business with minimum delay. The impact of the Web on business is far-reaching and unique. The process requires redefining business models, changing corporate culture, reinventing business processes, and establishing reliable customer service. This module provides an overview of e-commerce, a field that continues to evolve as companies look to the Internet for solutions to problems and opportunities for new business and examines the e-commerce with a specific thrust for the Logistics sector.
  • 3. Human Resource and Cross-Cultural Management
    • TThe module aims to equip students with the abilities and skills to adapt and manage an increasingly diverse and competitive business environment. Topics include the strategic role of human resource management; diversity management; job analysis and job design; human resource planning; and recruiting, screening and selection of candidates; interviewing candidates; orientation, training and development; compensation, incentives and benefits; evaluating and appraising employee performance; and organizational culture and change and cross-cultural issues.
  • 4. Operations Management
    • This module provides students with the conceptual framework of Operations Management that is applicable to both manufacturing and the service industries. Students will be exposed to Operations Management; Operations Decision Making; Forecasting; Facility Location; Materials Management-purchasing, inventory and JIT systems; MRP and CRP; Scheduling and Control; Project Management – CPM/PERT; and Quality Management and TQM system. Emphasis will be on applying problem solving, decision-making and project management tools in their work.
  • 5. Project Management & Project Work
    • Over the past several decades, more and more work has been accomplished through the use of projects and project management. The use of projects has been growing at an accelerated rate. Contrary to popular belief, management of logistics and supply chain project isn't just a concern for big businesses. Every business big or small relies on the effective planning and implementation of projects for it success. Our ability to plan and implement projects will help corporations to cut costs, recover funds and close loopholes, delivering up to three to four-fold returns on investment and possibly preventing thousands of dollars more in future losses. This module covers concepts and skills that are used by managers to propose, plan, secure resources, budget, and lead project teams to successful completions of their projects.
  • 6. Supply Chain and Logistic Systems
    • Logistics management and supply chain management are contemporary areas of business that is receiving increased amount of resources to increase their value-added content. Customers, internal, external and consumers are all demanding better services and products in the global environment. Life cycles of products are shortening as are production cycles times, these together with improved distribution networks allows smoother flow of products and with technology improved flow of information. These are concerns of Logistics and supply chain management. This module provides an overview of supply chain management, inbound and outbound logistics, and also focuses on key strategic issues that are critical to successful supply chain and logistics implementation.
  • 7. Transportation Management
    • The objective of this module is to assist students to understand both the fundamental role and importance of transportation in companies and in our society, and the complex environment in which transportation service is provided today. Students will learn the concepts and issues on alternative modes of transportation, regulations, policy and impact of globalisation.
