Students will learn about the changing role of Information systems and the key challenges facing managers using information systems. They will be exposed to different kinds and types of information systems and how IS can be employed to support various business functions. Students will learn to manage IT infrastructure - hardware and software assets and data resources management; and the internet and the new IT infrastructure. Other key topics include systems development phases and life cycle; the importance of change management in implementing information systems; and information systems security and control.
This module introduces students to the core concepts, methods, and values involved in doing research, from formulating research questions, reviewing the literature, designing questionnaires, to carrying out data analysis and presenting research results. The strengths and weaknesses of research methods are examined to help students choose an appropriate methodology, and the wider philosophical issues and ethical controversies that affect research are discussed. It also examines the distinction between quantitative and qualitative research techniques and how and when they should be used.
Wireless Application Programming with Java is designed to increase the breadth and depth of knowledge and practical skills of students in the wireless field. This module is designed to extend the students understanding of programming principles particularly knowledge of Java data types, statements, branching, iteration, arrays and lists, designing classes, interfaces and polymorphism, inheritance, I/O and file streams, sorting and searching and advanced Graphical User Interface (GUI) design. Students apply this knowledge in the solving of practical problems.
This module is designed to familiarize students with network management systems and the five areas of network management. It will introduce students to key terminology, definitions, and concepts. It will also explore network management systems and potential architectures. Students will also be exposed to various network management protocols in use today and also standard Management Information Bases (MIBs) and an insight to the problems network management can solve and details on using network management protocols and MIBs.
This module provides students the fundamental concepts of e-business, including its underlying information technologies, business processes, and applications in various industries in the aspect of customer-to-business, business-to-business, and intra-organizational transactions. Students will acquire hands-on experience in the analysis, design, development and implementation of e-business applications using the appropriate application tools.
This module will provide students with a good understanding in the provisioning and management of secured server systems, software services and hosting environment. The server applications covered include secured configuration, system hardening, access and activity authentication, authorization and monitoring of web server, application server, database server and hosting environment such as Windows and Unix operating systems. Students will also learn XML security, best practices and standards in securing web 2.0 and web services related security flaws.
Systems Analysis & Design (SAD) module will introduce students to the fundamental four-phase model of the systems development life cycle (planning, analysis, design and implementation) and with the different systems development methodologies. Students will be taught Unified Modelling Language or UML, the new object-oriented analysis and design standard used in the design of computer based systems, especially the various data flow diagramming concepts. In addition, the fundamentals of software project management as well as contemporary issues relating to software project management will be discussed.
This 12-week industrial project work will give students the practical experience of carrying out an independent business application project from identifying users/project requirements, design, development, implementation, testing to delivery and presentation of the software. Students will decide a real-life project/application or business function(s) in an organization or business of their choice. They are required to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the course and go through the entire systems development cycle to produce working IT solutions.
Each module is assessed by academic work comprising written assignments, case study reports, essays, examination as determined by the subject profile. The assessment criterion varies from module to module and level to level.
Generally the curriculums for all levels are taught over 4 terms of 12 weeks. Modules are conducted in formal instructor-led classroom sessions where students are introduced to the course discipline. Each term will cover 2-3 modules with 50 contact hours per module. Lectures are 2-hour sessions and Tutorial 3-hour sessions weekly.
